The filter was invented by aquarists near the city of Hamburg, hence the name “Hamburger Mattenfilter” or “HMF”.

The foam acts as a habitat for a diverse range of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, worms, ciliates, flagellates, and others. These microorganisms form a community that thrives within biofilms, generated by bacteria secreting extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), commonly known as "slime." This community functions as a bioreactor, efficiently processing waste into food and energy for its members, and ultimately into organic or inorganic byproducts utilized by plants, evaporation, or removed during water changes.

Establishing this "filter community" requires a significant amount of time, making it crucial to avoid disturbing it unless absolutely necessary. (Please clean it only once per year!) The brown filter sludge present in the filter is predominantly alive and not merely waste; disturbing or removing it can do more harm than good.

The Mattenfilter, with its expansive inflow area and specific surface, is an ideal solution for maintaining the filter community over the long term, as it remains operational for years without disruption.
